English Language ArtsIn 3rd grade, students will learn about reading literature, reading informational texts, foundation reading skills, speaking/listening skills, and language/grammar skills. These areas can be broken down into the following categories: Key Ideas & Details:
During this time block, we will use a Daily Cafe approach to practice and meet these learning standards. This means our ELA time will consist of Mini Lessons, Strategic Guided Reading Groups, Read to Self, Read to a Buddy, Listen to Reading, and Computer Practice, etc. Students will be held accountable for all of these activities.
- Find answers to questions in the text
- Find the central message or lesson in a text
- Describe characters and explain how their actions effect the story
- Describe the relationship in between the sequence of events
- Engage in discussion: ask/ answer questions in complete sentences and explain own ideas about a text
- Refer to chapters in stories, scenes in plays, and stanzas in poems
- Develop own point of view different from narrator and characters
- Use text features ex) bolded key words, table of contents, glossary, information boxes
- Determine a word's meaning based on the text
- Decode words with prefixes, suffices, and multi-syllable
- Read with appropriate pace, volume, and expression
- Decode figurative language (ex: similes, metaphors, hyperboles, etc.)
- Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
- Describe how an illustration contributes to a text
- Compare and contrast elements in a text (characters, setting, etc.)
- Compare and contrast a text to a different text
